Tutorial Three - Getting your own songs in Syrinscape

Your basic download version of Syrinscape comes with a few short music tracks in Channel four. The version I run in my games is replete with music tracks from the "Official Dungeons and Dragons Soundtrack CDs" and tracks from some of my favourite computer games such as "Oblivion - The Elder Scrolls" and "Neverwinter Nights". Sadly I can't supply these tracks to you, but below you will find a set of links, that will lead you to where you can get this music for yourself.

This tutorial will show you where to put your music and what to name the files, so that Syrinscape will play them as a part of a Soundscape.

What formats can Syrinscape use?

  • Syrinscape will accept sound formats .wav .ogg (Ogg Vorbis) .mp3 .wma and .acc. If you use .mp3 .wma or .acc Syrinscape will need to first convert these files to .wav format before it can use them. Just say yes when you are asked if you would like Syrinscape to do this.

Where do I put the files?

  • So that Syrinscape can use your music files, copy them into the relevant folder. If you want Syrinscape to play your songs as a part of the Witchwood sound set, copy the .mp3s (or other formats of music) into the "Witchwood" directory. Now you need rename the files so that Syrinscape will use them.

What do I name the files?

  • Usually Syrinscape uses the Effects 4 channel for music. Any file whose name starts with "e4" will be used by Syrinscape in channel 4, so rename your new music files e4*.* or the like. Don't change the ending!
  • The star stands for any combination of letters and numbers.
  • Example: once you have put a copy of "MyGreatSong.mp3" into the "Witchwood" directory (probably c:\Program Files\Syrinscape\Witchwood), rename it to "e4-MyGreatSong.mp3" (or infact "e4Anything.mp3"

    Another channel?

  • If you want Syrinscape to play back your file in the Effects channel 3 then the filename needs to start with "e3" instead... and so on.

    Run Syrinscape

  • Now when you run Syrinscape and select the sound set with your new songs in it, Syrinscape will pop up a window saying it has found some audio files it can convert and use. Say yes, and when playback starts you new songs will be included.

Where can I find good music tracks on-line?

  • You can find all sorts of great tracks online. The best place I have found so far, is Galbadia Hotel
  • Also, see Kingdom Hearts Insider.

Put the files straight into the right place...

  • When you are downloading these files trying Saving the files directly into the right place straight away. When you 'right-click' on the link... save the mp3 straight into the correct directory (which might be C:\Program Files\Syrinscape\Witchwood or something like that)... Before you click save, add an "e4" onto the start of the name. This way Syrinscape will know that you want it to use this new file in the Effects 4 channel.
